What? Why?

These are the most often asked questions when we tell someone of our plans to sell everything and move to Ecuador.  They are asked in succession and I believe the first question is really just meant as a pause while the brain begins to process what they just heard.

The responses have ranged from tears to hardy congratulations…and all things in between.  Most often I would say that the expressions and tone convey a sense of confusion.

I would categorize the majority of the comments as positive.  Many friends have already invited themselves to visit us in Ecuador…that is GREAT and you are all welcome to meet us anywhere in the world.  It will be wonderful to reunite frienships in some distant land.

I am not one to concern myself about the opinions of others…I am more comfortable doing my own thing usually in stark contrast to the direction of others.  However, I will admit that I experience emotions ranging from elation to sheer panic as we make preparations to leave our current lifestyle.

Last week our neighbors were in the driveway talking with Gina when I arrived home from work.  They are big supporters of our plans, and we were able to spend some time talking about our plans.  It was nice to hear words of encouragement, and confirmation that we have not lost our minds.

Change is never easy.  And just as we are learning what changes are needed for our new lifestyle, we need to appreciate that this is a change for our family and friends as well.  My guess is that some will be able to accept and manage this change for themselves better than others, perhaps others will never accept these changes.
