Rooftops are used in Ecuador similarly to how backyards are used in the U.S.. It is very common to see laundry hanging on a rooftop to dry, and in fact, many buildings have traditional wash racks on top of the roofs as well. I have seen a few BBQ’s or other cooking apparatus on nearby roofs and a few chairs as well.
What is most striking are the number of dogs on rooftops. That’s right, Fido needs someplace to hangout, sleep, do his business…and in Ecuador that is the rooftops. It is quite striking to see a doghouse on the rooftop and a ladder from the ground leading up to the roof.
It really throws you for a loop when you are walking down the street and all of a sudden there is a dog barking above your head…it is a strange sensation.
A block from our condo is a building with a Leather Store on street level, and a very large sheep dog that lives above on the roof. We had only seen the dog a few times, always curious to catch a glimpse of this large dog on the edge of the roof.
Last night while walking home we found out that he is not alone up there…
We are not sure if it is his brother, sister, son, or daughter…but our favorite Sheepdog in the Sky has a companion. They both look awful happy in their perch.
It is tough to get a feel for how odd this is from these pictures, but these guys are on the second floor…maybe 12 feet above the street. They are standing on their hind legs so they can see down to the street.
We thought the picture below was funny. Looks like he is trying on a shirt for size…
