We posted a story about our trip to Islas Ballestas in s. Peru a week or so ago, and I asked “Why would someone want to buy bird poop?” I asked that you email me your answers and I would post the best.
Well, a few folks sent in ideas. Not as many as I had hoped, which either means you are turned off talking about bird poop, or you are taking life a little to seriously…probably a little of both and more of the later would be my guess.
Anyway, Yvette sent in some fun thoughts on the subject of Guano that she was kind enough to share. Yvette is from Australia and parent of a couple young kids, she writes about traveling with kids on her blog. She has lots of cool ideas for traveling with kids, something I am obviously a big supporter of…check it out!
Ok, without further ado, here are Yvette’s ideas about Guano (bird poop)…
Guano: well the first thing I thought of was fertilizer. I’m sure
that somewhere along the way, I have seen some nature TV show all
about mining guano and the bird populations associated with the
mining site. It is naturally high in nitrogen and phosphorus, and
therefore perfect for fertilizer. What I didn’t know, but found out
by Googling guano, is that it is also used in gunpowder. So there you
are!

Thanks to everyone that participated. We are researching the mating habits of the Bolivian Donkey that we hope to share with you shortly.
